Portland Lime Sand Mortar Masonry




Cement mortar must be mixed just before use so that it does not cure prematurely. Masonry sand is ideal, and can be purchased from most building supply stores. Add any dry additives according to the directions on the package and stir the powdered mixture thoroughly. Adding lime to the mortar will improve its workability, make the mortar more water resistant, and will reduce the amount of shrinkage upon curing.

If it is necessary to restore workability, mortar may be retempered by adding water and remixing. Preblended with sand to minimize labour costs. Great workability and board life. After surviving 25 years of brutal winter temperatures, my patios look like they did the day they were finished. There are many different types and styles of cement-based materials available in pre-blended bag form and just as many or more ways to make mixes in the field.

Keep the masonry covered with the blankets for at least 48 hours if possible. These materials when finely ground have the ability to adsorb water thus increasing workability.

Portland Cement Lime Mix

Lime is made up of hexagonal shaped hydroxide crystals. The particles of lime in a portland/lime blend are very fine, helping to increase its ability to retain water effectively, again to help with workability.

It may be used above or below grade when manufactured to the appropriate specification. Portland cement usually has crystals as one of the ingredients in the production is limestone.
