Outside Exterior Painting Tips

The painting of the interior masonry surfaces is a little different from painting of the exterior ones.

Perfect Preparation and Application

It is not necessary to apply a sealer when painting the exterior concrete. Since brick is porous, you’ll need to push the paint into the brick. For smaller projects like a fireplace, a paint brush will do. In addition, concrete requires the use of forms to mold the wet mixes into the desired shape until they can be removed once the mix has dried and is strong enough to stand on its own.

These additives should be removed from the surface as they can interfere with the adhesion of your coatings. We talked with three professionals to get their take on painting brick. Brick that’s chipping, deteriorating, molding or in overall poor condition is always a bad candidate for paint. Even if the idea doesn’t faze you, think of its impact on curb appeal. Should you change your mind, paint removal is costly and time-consuming. Opt for traditional snowy white, match the mortar, or pick up one of the subtle shades in the brick. Make sure they coordinate with your exterior decorating scheme. Stir paint thoroughly before use. On application of the final coat lay off the paint in a single direction. After letting it soak for half an hour, proceed to scrub the area with a wire brush. If using and extension ladder, at least three rungs should be overlapping for stability. Problem areas affected by mould, algae or climbers should be thoroughly cleaned and treated by a fungicidal wash. Dirt and mildew are often more visible on painted brick, especially if going white or light in color, and you’ll need to power wash or scrub your house down now and again.

Not to mention, it can potentially increase resale value since brick is valued as a durable exterior surface. Set the washer to somewhere between 1500 and 2000 pounds per square inch. There are clear, solid and textured finishes to choose from for brick, cement board, concrete and stucco. Failing to remove loose and peeling paint can result in the paint flakes mixing in with your fresh coat of paint and marring the finish.

Work your way from top to bottom of house in a smooth, controlled manner, overlapping each stroke by 8 inches. Siding can be cleaned with a low-pressure spray tip. Once dry, lightly sand using medium-grit sanding block.

These qualities make them a little trickier to paint, but they certainly do not make concrete unpaintable. One more point: you might want to trim the grass and line the ground around the concrete surface with a drop cloth or something of the sort to protect the surface from picking up various particles.

If the surface has old paint, make sure no old cracking areas remain after power washing. However, the regular exterior latex paint should also do the job. Wait for the paint to dry (around 24 hours) and then apply a second coat if needed. Exterior painting jobs on concrete walls freshen up a house exterior. It’s not the most exciting part of any project, but skipping the prep-work will just lead to headaches down the road. Other things to consider: painted exterior brick will need to be repainted approximately every three to five years. If you’re painting, the old paint will probably be covered up. It is durable and doesn’t peel or bubble, even in harsh weather conditions; in fact, its “built-in” color actually develops an attractive patina as it ages.

They will soften the effect of a brick color you really do not care for. Putting paint on it is like encasing it in plastic. Think carefully before painting interior or exterior brick. This residue is made up of deposits of water-soluble salt buildup, often from moisture inside the brick. Acidic solutions can result in paint chipping. Have someone holding the ladder and maintain a balanced centre of gravity (belt level) inside the rungs. Don’t forget – the colour will look different depending on the time of day and which way the wall is facing. A sturdy ladder is essential as you will be working at height, a specialist masonry brush to get into difficult areas and a masonry roller brush and extendable handle to cover large areas quickly.

Start by dividing each wall into manageable sections that you can finish in each session of painting- a good tip is to use features like windows and drainpipes as your boundaries.

If you’re using a roller, try to vary the angle of your strokes. As opposed to covering the surface like a paint, a brick stain is absorbed by the brick and ultimately acts like a dye. Since the moisture cannot evaporate, it stays trapped within the surface and results in blistering and chipping. Painting brick creates a film over the brick. As opposed to a surface treatment, the stain penetrates deep into the brick and once dry, forms a durable bond with the masonry to permanently lock in colour.

Brick experts agree that to correctly maintain your painted brick, it should be repainted every 3-5 years. Add soap to the stream for more difficult efflorescence and mildew deposits. Be sure to use 100-percent acrylic caulk and a foam backer rod for bigger cracks. For best results, brush and roll the brick as you would any other wall. There are even products that provide one-coat coverage. The product also can be tinted and used indoors or outside. Once the surface has been cleaned, go over again with a stiff brush to remove any loose material, including paint flaking. Coats must be 24 hours apart, with water dampening after each for proper curing. Note that if your brick wall has already been painted, applying sealer is not necessary. Apply the paint using a long-nap roller in long, smooth strokes. You also need a brush for cutting in along the walls when painting a floor. The thicker the mil of the paint, the longer this process can take. Be sure to work your way from top to bottom in a smooth, controlled manner, overlapping each stroke by 8 inches. We’ve got one in our living room that we would like to paint white but was wondering what paint to use to make sure it also resist the heat?

We talked with three professionals to get their take on painting brick. This cuts down on the number of layers you’ll need to finish the product. Remove any old paint or rust spots with a wire brush, and remove debris and dirt with a strong bristle brush. Let the size of your project be your guide. Ready to get free quotes from local contractors? If you see features like those, then you have the more durable handmade bricks, which should never be painted. Before you rush into planting your dream yard, keep a few tips in mind. Sources of excess moisture in the wood must be eliminated prior to repainting to obtain normal service life of these paints. In such cases, all old paint layers must be removed back to the bare wood before repainting. Do not apply if rain, snow or lower temperatures are expected within 48 hours. I applied with a brush and it went on like silk. Now, there are several moisture areas showing. Will that cover the moisture spots? I need to sandpaper the outside wall a bit, is there a suitable mason army sandpaper? This will improve the paint’s drying time and minimize the effect of harmful vapors. Like other surfaces, masonry should be cleaned before painting. Because most masonry is more porous and more highly textured than materials such as drywall or wood, the extra step of applying a sealer is necessary before priming and painting.

Some brick is not so porous and most paint will tend to peel.
