The first, and the simplest, involves constructing the wall frame while it lies on the floor and then standing it up and attaching it.

With the addition of ½-inch ceiling drywall and floor finish, the final wall height should be very close to 8 foot. Two-by-six wall studs are 5 ½ inches wide and they provide a larger stud space for running drainpipes, air ducts or other mechanical elements.

A circular saw works well for cutting wall studs and a framing nailer, fitted with 16d nails, makes quick work of framing walls that are lying down and attaching floor and ceiling plates.

Your older construction could be several layers of brick and not just a 1 layer (wythe) thick.
